MOLINE, IL. – The SPHL named Quad City Storm forward Leif Mattson and defenseman Jacob Gagnon the Warrior Hockey Co-Players of the Week for January 6-January 12.
Leif Mattson spent the weekend filling up the stat sheet, adding 5 points to his league leading 46. He got his weekend started with a Power Play Goal in the 2nd period of Friday night’s matchup against the Rail Yard Dawgs, later adding an assist on the game-tying goal. Mattson continued to dominate on Saturday, adding two assists and a shorthanded goal in the 2nd period of the contest.
In addition to being the league leader in points (46), Mattson is second in the SPHL in both goals (20) and assists (26).
Jacob Gagnon opened the weekend by recording his first SPHL goal 13:23 into the first period on Friday night. One goal wasn’t enough for the California native, who notched his second goal of the evening with a wrist shot from the blue line that had eyes for the net, proving to be the game-winner in a 4-3 Storm victory. The goals kept coming for Gagnon on the weekend, as he added his second game winning goal of the weekend on Saturday to seal the weekend sweep of the Rail Yard Dawgs.
Despite being added to the Storm roster on December 31, 2024 and featuring in just six games this season, Gagnon shares the second most goals amongst SPHL rookie defensemen (3), trailing only fellow Storm member Johnny Witzke (8). He also leads all SPHL rookie defensemen in GWG (2) and sits in fourth amongst SPHL rookie defensemen in +/- (+5).
