MOLINE, IL. – The SPHL named Quad City Storm forward Leif Mattson the Warrior Hockey Player of the Week for December 16-December 22.
Mattson opened the weekend making his presence felt in Peoria with a six-point effort (1G, 5A) to help lift the Storm to a 7-4 victory on Friday night. The first period of Friday’s matchup proved to be a historic one for the Storm. The team set a new franchise record for most goals in a single period with six. Mattson recorded one goal and four assists in the frame.
The Manitoba native continued to light up the score sheet when the Storm returned to Vibrant Arena on Saturday Night, scoring just 12 minutes into the first period and adding an assist on the Johnny Witzke PPG in the final seconds of the second period. Later in the night Leif sent the Rivermen home, scoring the GWG in the 10th round of the Shootout to seal the #ColdWarOn74 weekend sweep of the Rivermen.
Following his eight-point week, Mattson is the league leader in points (37) and assists (21), and ranks second in goals (16). Mattson is just 12 points from tying the franchise’s single season points record (59) that he set just one season ago. In addition, he is just 11 assists shy of tying Shane Bennett’s ‘21-’22 single season assists record (32).
