MOLINE, IL. – The Quad City Storm has announced its protected list for the 2023-2024 SPHL season. The protected list is composed of 13 players that ended the ‘22-‘23 season on the Quad City Storm roster. These players are ineligible for recruitment or signing by other SPHL teams.
Forwards:
Ben Assad: Assad spent most of the 2022-2023 season in Peoria, scoring 9 goals and recording 7 assists in 44 appearances before adding one goal in two games played with the Storm to end the season.
Cole Golka: A familiar face in the Quad Cities, Golka enjoyed his most productive professional season this year. Golka led the team with 31 points, scoring 16 goals and dishing 15 assists in 50 games.
Davis Kirkendall: After 29 games with the Vermilion County Bobcats Kirkendall joined the Storm. The Minnesota native tallied nine points in 19 games in the QC.
Leif Mattson: Mattson started the season averaging 1PPG before earning his first ECHL call-up. Mattson spent over 3 months in ‘The Coast’ with the Everblades and Kalamazoo Wings before returning to the Quad Cities to end the season. Mattson ended the year with 8 goals and 9 assists in 19 games played with the Storm.
Mike Mercurio: Mercurio initially joined the Storm on a PTO in the middle of the season before earning a Standard Player Contract and solidifying his place with the team. His hard-working, grind it out mentality led to his first double digits point season in the SPHL.
Mike Moran: A two-time SPHL Player of the Week, Moran led the Storm in goals scored, despite picking up an upper-body injury that sidelined him until the end of the season. Moran found the back of the net 18 times, including his first professional hat-trick against the Evansville Thunderbolts on October 30th. He ended the season with 30 points in 42 games played.
Logan Nelson: Nelson opened the season as one of the top point-getters in the league before earning his first ECHL call-up. The forward spent a little over a month with the Iowa Heartlanders and Kalamazoo Wings before returning to the Quad Cities. Following his return, Nelson set a franchise record for assists in a single game (6) and points in a single game (7) against Vermilion County on January 21st. The Minnesota native finished the season with 13 goals and 15 assists.
Defensemen:
Trevor Momot: After a strong first half of the season, the hard-nosed defenseman received his first call-up for a 3-week stint with the ECHL’s Iowa Heartlanders in late March. The defenseman returned with confidence and dished out 6 assists in his final 7 appearances with the Storm to finish with 4 goals and 14 assists.
Troy Murray: The Toronto native played in Macon and Fayetteville before coming to the Quad Cities as part of a trade that sent Carter Shinkaruk to the Marksmen. Murray is a tough defenseman and physical presence on the ice. He accumulated 89 penalty minutes in 47 total games played this season.
Eliott St-Pierre: St-Pierre spent time with the Peoria Rivermen and Knoxville Ice Bears before a trade brought him to the Quad Cities. The hard nosed defenseman recorded his first professional goal in a two-point effort against the Pensacola Ice Flyers on March 5th and recorded a +2 in throughout his 50 games played this season.
Jordon Stone: After spending the entire ’21-’22 and first half of the ’22-’23 season in the ECHL with the Utah Grizzlies, Jordon Stone joined the Storm in mid-February, picking up 14 penalty minutes and adding a pair of assists in his 19 games played.
Goalies:
Brent Moran: The former Dallas Stars 4th Rd draft pick started the season with the Marksmen before accepting a callup to the ECHL’s Worcester Railers. The Storm received Brent Moran’s player rights in a trade that sent Connor Fries to the Marksmen. Moran made zero appearances with the Storm, having spent the rest of the season in the ECHL.
Kevin Resop: The Florida man appeared in a Storm franchise record 40 games, recording a 2.69 GAA and a .916 SV% to go along with 3 shutouts, earning him All-SPHL Second Team honors this season. Resop enjoyed the best season of his career, which included two consecutive shutouts against the Peoria Rivermen; a stretch that saw him record over 75 consecutive saves
