A Look Back at an Eventful 2022-2023 Campaign

May 05, 2023

MOLINE, IL – The 2022-2023 Quad City Storm season concluded April 7 & 8 with a home series versus the Huntsville Havoc.  The Storm defeated the third place Havoc 5-4 on Friday and fell in the finale on Saturday 2-1.

The Storm finished the season in ninth place.  One spot shy of the SPHL’s final playoff position.  Over the course of the season the Storm rostered 54 different players and finished the season with just six players on the active roster who took the ice for the Storm on opening night.  A majority of the turnover was a result of injuries, including multi-month IR stints for forwards Michael Moran, Logan Nelson and Filip Virgili and more than a dozen ECHL call ups.  A franchise record six players finished the year on season-ending IR and three players who received call ups finished the season in the ECHL.

“The result of this season is one that cannot be tolerated,” said Storm Head Coach Dave Pszenyczny.  “The goal for this team was to win a championship and there is a list of reasons that didn’t happen, but the bottom line is that a season like this can’t, and won’t, happen again.”

There is reason for optimism heading into 2023-2024, with a core of skilled players expected to return to the Quad CIties.

“An offseason for guys to get healthy has never been more important,” Pszenyczny continued, “Our players are very frustrated with how things unfolded and are anxious to get back to the Quad Cities in October.”

Off the ice, the Storm saw the second largest percentage attendance increase in the league.  After averaging 2,374 fans per game last season in the first season post-COVID, the club worked to show a 31.3% increase to average 3,119 fans per game; the highest average attendance since the franchise’s inaugural season.

“The increase in attendance is a very exciting sign of organizational growth,” said Team President Brian Rothenberger.  “We are fortunate to have a front office full of tremendously dedicated employees, an owner who provides the necessary support and a community who continues to show up and support us.”

The Storm is also excited to have, again, donated over $100,000 to local nonprofits in the Quad City Area.  To date, the team has given back more than $400,000 to the community.
